Utilizing the 3D Design tool, CoSpaces Edu, my 3rd and 4th grade students have participated in our "Dream World" project over the past several years. This project, and the lessons associated with it, addresses multiple digital literacy standards and learning goals that are a part of Media class. Some of the major benefits of learning 3D design include:

  • Reinforces technology and fine motor skills such as dragging and dropping, zooming, rotating, and translating using trackpads, computer mice, and touch screens

  • Develops spatial reasoning skills

  • Reinforces the coding work that was started earlier in the year. Students are taught how to code multiple objects within their projects and have developed sophisticated, interactive scenes using these new skills

  • This project helps students practice storytelling, designing for an audience, and problem solving as they tackle multiple challenges within the design of their project

Throughout the project, students have access to iPads, smartphones, and cardboard VR viewers to preview, revise, and ultimately share their projects. All materials, from software to technology tools, to VR viewers were acquired through a series of grants that I have written over the course of multiple years.
